It is a horizontal scrolling shoot them up. It was designed by Mario van Zeist. Gameplay Disposable Hero is a shoot them up in the tradition of Scramble (1980) and R-Type (1987). The player controls a ship in a forced horizontal scrolling environment and the goal of the game is to reach the end of the level by destroying the enemies and avoiding the projectiles. The action takes place in the year 2879, where the player is an agent of a specialized combat unit, D-Hero, fighting against an alien invasion1. The game contains five regular levels, containing one or more intermediate bosses and an end boss, and a final boss level. The game focuses on small but tough opponents, and alternates between combat and pure avoidance phases2. There are three types of items to collect in the scenery: scrolls, which are the basis for upgrading the ship, energy bubbles, which replenish the energy gauge, and miniature ships, which give an extra life. The ship's upgrade takes place by stopping in the dome-like labs scattered throughout the levels. The power ups are not immediately available in the lab, as it can take dozens of seconds to analyze the scrolls. The player can combine the unlocked weapons within the limit of the engine's power to increase the firepower and adapt it to the difficulties encountered in the different sections. There are about 30 upgrades in total (engine, speed, triple shot, missile satellite, bomb, grenade launcher, shield, etc); some are reserved for a second ship that is unlocked during the game. The game offers four game modes that determine the general difficulty of the game through the number of enemies and projectiles, or the amount of energy recovered during stops at the labs.
