Windows 3.0 Floppy for IBM-PC

MS-DOS · Windows 3.x · Microsoft

ABOUT ================================================================================ The bootfloppy image for this version of Windows 3.0 is IBM_WIN.IMG. It's a 3.5" 720k floppy image, which is the max density the IBM PC's BIOS can boot with in my experiments. I designed this image to be fully IBM compatible, so this will boot on literally any PC. You need a CGA or CGA-compatible card to boot the OS. That should be no problem, however, since most cards (even today!) are still CGA-compatible. The image contains a stripped down version of "Windows 3.0" with enough optional components removed to fit it on a floppy disk. The 386 and 286 kernels were removed to preserve disk space, so Windows must be started in Real Mode (win.com /r) or it will hang at the logo. The image will boot straight to the MS-DOS Executive rather than Progman or Winfile (both of which are too large to fit in the place of MS-DOS Executive). You will need a second floppy to run any new programs.
