Introduction to Fourier Analysis - accompanying DOS disk

1995 · MS-DOS · Dr. Norman Morrison

This entry contains the files and software (version 1.31) found on the DOS diskette accompanying the textbook "Introduction to Fourier Analysis", by Dr. Norman Morrison (ISBN 978-0-471-01737-0). The software was delivered on disk as a single executable, the LHa self-extracting archive FFTNM131.EXE. Executing that file would unpack README1.TXT (which contains directions on how to install and run the software) and INSTALL.EXE. Running that executable would unpack the actual FFT software. The first three files can be found under the folder "DOS/ARCHIVES" in the attached zip file, and the remaining files under "DOS/FFT". I've added a simple startup script, "menu.bat", to allow the user to choose between the three main programs included on the diskette (and also to serve as an entry-point for the Internet Archive's web-based DOS emulator, as it can only be configured to run one program/script). As well as being included in the zip file, the READMEs from the disk have been attached separately and can be found by expanding the "TEXT" section in the "Download Options" menu on the right. Apart from README1, there's README16 and README17 (which provide further practical details on how to use the FFT and FFTMAX programs, as well as the differences between them) and README18, which provides further details on the PLOTS program. The files have been lightly edited to convert them from DOS-437 to UTF8 encoding, and to remove some spurious unprintable characters from the equations at the end of README16. Later versions of the software, which were never distributed outside UCT, have also been included in the "WIN" folder in the archive. These binaries were produced by Windows versions of the TrueBasic compiler (v5.1 Silver release, v5.1 and v5.5 Gold release). FFTNEW is a straightforward re-compilation of the DOS source code available at the time with the TrueBasic Windows compiler, while the other programs all had their sources modified to be able to use TrueBasic's Window's libraries. I worked on adapting the sources for the FFTWIN202 and PLOTS versions, while FFTWIN203 is the last known extant version of the FFT software, provided by Dr. Morrison. Also included in the "WIN" folder are the TrueBasic runtime libraries/DLLs required by the software to function (found on the TrueBasic " Free and Demos " page, in the " DLL Package " section). To be able to run the programs, at least under Windows 10, the DLLs should be copied to the "C:\Windows\SysWOW64" folder. Sadly, none of the executables run correctly under the Internet Archive's emulator, and only FFTNEW and PLOTS run under recent versions of Windows (regardless of the Compatibility settings chosen.) Under the current version of the Internet Archive's DOSBOX emulator (stated to be "SVN" when you type "ver" at the emulator command prompt) the software runs, yes, but every attempt to enter a number results in an error like "Your expression --> 2 For example, try running the PLOTS program, and then entering "C" [enter] > space > "A" [enter] (The square-wave Fourier Series option) > "C" [enter] > "2" [enter]. This is not directly a problem with the software; I've tested it under FreeDOS and it works as expected. I've also tested it in the standalone DOSBOX download, v0.74, and it exhibits the same problem. However, the latest DOSBOX version at the time of writing, v0.74 -3 , does not show this bug. Similarly for the Windows versions - they run, but throw up errors on Windows 10. However, I seem to recall the software running properly on pre-Win10 versions, and perhaps even earlier Win10 builds. The programs run fine under Linux, with Wine - but the incorrect locale/characters are used... If you'd like to properly use this software, then, your options are either to wait for Internet Archive to update the version of the emulator used on their site, or download the attached archive and run the files in different OS/emulator versions.
