Amazeing v26
puzzle · MS-DOS · Windows 3.x · Stuart Swain · Stuart Swain
Amazeing is my long‑running maze game from the 90s that it seems I just can’t let go. 😂 It actually started life in 1992 as a DOS game, which probably explains a lot. It moved to Windows in 1993, then to 32-bit for version 6... and now version 26.0 (26 April 2026) is a nostalgic return to 16‑bit Windows 3.1. Because apparently I still enjoy doing things the hard way. This release started with the old v5.55 code base, picked up some of the good stuff from v6, and then my creativity took hold again. The result is a retro‑authentic Amazeing that still feels like the original, but with a few new tricks. You can generate single‑level mazes from 10×10 up to 50×50 , or multi‑level 3D mazes from 5×5×5 up to 25×25×25 -- which are far more disorienting than the numbers suggest. A 5×5×5 can already wreak havoc with the spatial skills you thought you had. New in v26: Organic and Nightmare maze algorithms Optional loops in 2D mazes Improved extended‑corridor perspective Fixes to compass behaviour, markers, directory handling, and stray pixels Difficulty and scoring tweaks (still more of a guideline than a science) Nightmare mode is intentionally unfair: wraparound mazes, lying indicators, glitchy compass, spotlighted mud map, and random start/exit positions. It’s designed to confuse you. For the full rundown and history, see AMAZEING.REV included in the archive. This is a retro release for retro enthusiasts -- a 2026 build of a 1993 game, running in a 16‑bit Windows environment, because… well, because I can. Enjoy getting lost. Playable in your browser thanks to archive.org. But better downloaded and played on real vintage hardware for the best experience! And a note of thanks to Swizzley too for having preserved a few versions here that I no longer had.
