TVTEL - 90s Israeli online service

1995 · MS-DOS · Bezeq, Elbit, Tadiran

(מידע בעברית בסוף) TVTEL was an early attempt to create a commercial Israeli online service, and was based on the French Minitel. The program was develeoped by 3 companies: Bezeq (the government-owned telecommunications corporation), Elbit, and Tadiran. Users of the program dialed into it via a short 3 number hotline (133), and could take advantage of its varied services - Buying groceries online; Ordering books from the retail chain "Steimatzki"; Viewing the yellow and white pages; Logging into your bank account, Reading astrology forecasts Logging into chat and e-mail services, and much more. This is version 2.10a of the DOS client, but there were later versions - in December 1996 the program was renamed from TVTEL to Neteor and a Windows client was developed. The first thing that will load up is the TVTEL main menu. From here you can choose from 1-6: Log onto the TVTEL system (offline, non-functioning) Log onto the service using a code (offline) Manage files Edit letters using the QTEXT Hebrew-English wordprocessor (get out of it by pressing 0) Install a new TVTEL version Exit the main menu You can F1 at any time in order to pull up Hebrew help information or click F4 in order to go back a screen. After exiting you can load up "setup" to change modem and some other settings or "install" which would reinstall the program. In the setup you can switch to a null modem which will prevent the program from kicking you out of the service in a few seconds. When in null modem mode you can press F10 in order to get out of the program, which will load up a "Thank you and Goodbye" splash screen before exiting. Many icons from the program are available offline, in the ICONS folder. They are in the PCX format - these can be converted to PNG. For more information you can read the Hebrew Wikipedia article on the service: " TVTEL ".
