WILDERNESS SURVIVAL

1989 · adventure · MS-DOS · Christian D. Carroll

INTRODUCTION WILDERNESS SURVIVAL V2.0 is the much anticipated update to the extremely popular V1.61. WILDERNESS SURVIVAL was made popular by the University of Rhode Island's Games Network. It was later translated into Turbo Pascal code for the IBM PC/XT/AT. It was born out of the idea that there were too many fantasy adventure games out on the market. While I love to slay a dragon just as much as the next guy, I felt a need for a REAL situation type adventure, and what better place to have one than in the woods of a large National Park?! What would YOU do if you suddenly found yourself lost in Rugglestone National Park with a known killer hiding out in the woods and the only thing you had on you was the shirt on your back?! The reality of many facets of the game appealed to many gamers. Also, I was never crazy about traditional adventures and their two-word command features. I love to puzzle-solve a situation, but trying to determine each adventure game's vocabulary just wasn't my idea of fun! They ranged from extensive to limited. I felt I could still capture all of the excitement of finding out what a particular item does in a certain situation and still use menu-driven commands. The result? An adventure game with ties to the real world, all neatly put in a package where every command is at your fingertips! I hope you enjoy this approach to gaming, I know I do! ...boy, you really did it this time! While taking a leisurely nature walk around Rugglestone National Park, you realize that you are COMPLETELY LOST!! You check your pockets, and find out that the only thing you have on you is a Swiss Army Knife. Remembering the advice of the Park employees about the escaped murderer who is supposedly hiding out in the woods, you anxiously start to find help before dark...and come to think of it, you are feeling a bit hungry....(as you hear the bears howling off in the distance)... Yes, you must find help before you starve to death....or worse! The Ranger Station is close by, but you must find it within a 100 square mile radius, and that's alot of ground to cover! But with lots of area comes lots of surprises, both good and bad. There are pitfalls to slow you down and there's tools to help you on your journey. Almost all of the items you find are helpful, it's just a matter of knowing how, where, and when to use them! And food and rest are a must in the forest. You must sleep and eat regularly just like in the real world! And on top of all of this, you must solve a crime! Good luck on your experience!
