Xigx: A simple string-copying automaton that has exponential growth almost everywhere (i.e. there are only a finite number of initial configurations that don't blow up.) It was published with a proof of this fact in 2007, but was discovered and initially implemented several years earlier, in 2001. Esolangs.org entry: Xigxag Technical Information This Internet Archive item runs the Xigxag reference interpreter under Perl 5.8.8 under DOSBox. A menu is included to help demonstrate the automaton.
