Yablochko

1946 · musical · Ivan Nikitchenko

"Yablochko" is an experimental short film from 1946, produced as part of a research project by the Soyuzdetfilm (Союздетфильм) studio to explore new methods of combined filming techniques. Under the title "Optical Transfers," it was shown at film institutes as an educational tool. The pianist plays "Yablochko" while a small sailor figurine dances on the piano. It jumps onto the keyboard, taps out the rhythm with its feet, leaps over the pianist’s hands, taps on a cigarette case, hangs onto a lampshade, misbehaves, sheds its uniform, and reveals itself as a mechanical figure made of metal parts. The figurine continues to dance, disassembles and reassembles itself, juggles its own head, and performs other antics. The film was created using a method where the pianist and dancer, filmed at different scales and on different films, were optically combined on a small screen and re-filmed onto new film, frame by frame. The technique was developed by the Nikitchenko brothers and carried out with equipment made by experts at "Soyuzdetfilm." The painstaking work of the small crew lasted about a year. This experimental work was a scientific study for film students, explaining why it wasn’t subjected to censorship despite its unconventional form.
