Konstantin Sergeyevich Lopushansky ( Russian : Константин Сергеевич Лопушанский; born 12 June 1947) is a Soviet and Russian film director, film theorist, and author, best known for directing the apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic films Dead Man's Letters (1986), A Visitor to a Museum (1989), Russian Symphony (1994), and The Ugly Swans (2006). Solo [Соло] (1980) A glimpse into a few hours in the life of a soloist musician during the siege of Leningrad, in WWII. The Leningrad philharmonic is going to play Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony, to be broadcast to England. Like his fellow musicians, the soloist is weak and half-starved, and doubts whether he will be able to perform well enough. Dead Man's Letters [Письма мёртвого человека; Pis'ma myortvogo cheloveka ] (1986) [ English subs in .srt file ] In a desolate world following the nuclear apocalypse, a scholar helps a small group of adults and children survive in the basement of a former museum of history. In his mind, he writes letters to his only son that will never be read and tries to find shreds of hope in his new reality. A Visitor to a Museum [Посетитель музея; Posetitel muzeya ] (1989) It is the future, the world is in ruins and a large portion of the population consists of deformed mutants living in reservations. In this world a man decides to spend his vacation visiting the ruins of a museum that is now buried under the sea. Russian Symphony [Русская симфония; Russkaya simfoniya ] (1994) Ivan Mazaev finds out that some children were left behind in a sinking school, and is slowly driven mad as he tries to save them. A parable on the theme of The Last Judgment, numerous catastrophic events reveal a certain ambiguity in their origins, accompanied by the terrible suspicion that the things going on are some kind of a performance or theatrical production. The Turn of the Century [Конец века; Konets veka ] [ director's cut ] (2001) [ no subs ] 'The Institute of Conscious Dreams' is a mysterious place.
