Трудно быть Богом (Hard to be a God) 2013

Hard to be a God (2013) 1080p, English Subtitles A film obsessed with filth, but so technically clean. A film beautiful in its ugliness. Hard to be a God portrays how a world without intellectuals fails to be able to engineer a civilized society, and postulates on the nature of man as bound and trapped in a never ending cycle of the same instincts and tribulations. Lauded for its incredible set decor, costume design and photography the story itself is intentionally tedious, meandering, and chaotic. To better understand Hard to be a God we need to not only be familiar with the source material (the 1964 science-fiction novel of the same name by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky), but also to understand the films creator Aleksei German (1938-2013), whose sensibilities had largely been shaped by his experiences growing up in Stalinist Russia and the Soviet Union. The film presents the archaic not in the iridescent light of the perennial philosophy, the shrewd order of the Manusmriti, or even the charm of Arthurian legend, but instead, the kind of stereotypical medieval European poverty seen in nightmares. The amazing production design and execution that it took to achieve this is what ultimately has it often compared with other works from the paragons of Cinema like Eisenstein, Tarkovsky, Welles, Fellini, Tarr, Żuławski and Jodorowsky. It is the final, uncompromising word from one of Russia's true titans.
