An archival amateur documentary film from 1980 produced by the Amateur Film Studio of the Dniprospetsstal (DSS) special metallurgy plant. The film captures the active participation of Dniprospetsstal steelworkers in the traditional International Workers' Day (May Day) parade in Zaporizhzhia, alongside vivid footage of heavy industrial steel manufacturing. FILM CREDITS AND PRODUCTION TEAM: - Created by: O. Muzychenko, I. Rohalev, A. Narushevych, S. Dovzhenko, L. Borodynets, B. Zalissky, S. Skobeev. - Digitization: Digitized from original reels by the specialists of the Center for Urban History in Lviv (LivArch) in 2025. - Archive: The physical film master and records are permanently preserved in the collections of the History Museum of PJSC "Dniprospetsstal" in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. FILM CONTENT AND SYNOPSIS: The film serves as an excellent visual resource for studying late Soviet mass rituals, corporate identity, and industrial propaganda: 1. The May Day Parade (May 1, 1980): Scenes from the festive demonstration in downtown Zaporizhzhia, featuring marching brass bands, flag-bearers, and the official column of the Dniprospetsstal plant. 2. Prominent Workers: Celebrated steelworker S.E. Rusnakov is filmed holding the banner; assistant steelworker I.M. Marchenko (Steel Melting Shop No. 1 / SPZ-1) carries a propaganda sign reading: "1400 Tons of Steel Melted Over the Plan." The footage also highlights legendary factory figures and future Heroes of Socialist Labor, including Volodymyr Mykolayovych Kalish, K.G. Kozlenko, and B.G. Zibrov. 3. Industrial Labor and Rituals: High-intensity footage of quality steel manufacturing, electric arc furnaces operations, and heavy industrial steel forging inside the Forging and Pressing Shop (Kovalcko-Presovyy Tsekh - KPTS). The film includes an ideological ritual where Young Pioneers present flowers to the steelworkers participating in the "Melt of Friendship" (Plavka Druzhby). 4. Late Soviet Motifs: The demonstration footage continues with dramatic intertitles reading "If the Motherland Calls" (Если Родина позовет), transitions back to the intense, hazardous work of a steelworker at an electric furnace. This film is a prime historical source for international researchers focusing on late-Soviet social history, labor history, heavy metallurgy iconography, and state-sponsored public celebrations in Ukraine.
