Steelworkers on the Black Sea: The Dniprospetsstal Plant's Resort in Miskhor, Crimea

1979 · history · Amateur Film Studio of the Dniprospetsstal Plant · History Museum of PJSC Dniprospetsstal

An authentic and beautifully preserved archival amateur documentary film produced in 1979 by the members of the Amateur Film Studio at the Dniprospetsstal special metallurgy plant. The film captures the summer recreation, health rehabilitation, and daily leisure of steelworkers and their families at the "Komunary" guest house/resort in the coastal town of Miskhor, located on the picturesque Southern Coast of Crimea. HISTORICAL CONTEXT & CORPORATE PATERNALISM: This footage serves as an exceptional visual primary source for researching the system of Soviet industrial paternalism and the "welfare state" infrastructure managed by heavy metallurgy giants. According to the historical records of the Dniprospetsstal Museum: - In 1960, through a joint-investment venture (doleva uchast), the Dniprospetsstal plant secured 54 permanent bed-places at the prominent "Komunary" sanatorium complex in Miskhor to provide subsidized medical and leisure vouchers for its heavy industrial workers. - As the plant's social budget expanded, an additional dedicated accommodation residential building with a capacity of 100 beds was later constructed specifically for the enterprise's collective. VISUAL MATERIAL: The 1979 footage documents the quintessential late Soviet resort experience: metallurgical workers and engineers relaxing by the Black Sea, strolling through subtropical coastal parks, participating in health resort treatments, and engaging in informal social activities. It offers rich historical metadata regarding Soviet fashion, tourist behavior, leisure architecture, and the state-subsidized tourism networks of the Brezhnev era. PRODUCTION & CONSERVATION METADATA: - Created by: Amateur Film Studio of the Dniprospetsstal Plant (1979). - Digitization: Digitized from the original master film reels by specialists at the Center for Urban History in Lviv (LivArch). - Archive: The physical master reels and corporate real estate records are permanently preserved in the collections of the History Museum of PJSC "Dniprospetsstal" in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. This documentary is highly recommended for international scholars investigating the social history of the working class, visual anthropology, the history of Soviet tourism and leisure, and the development of resort infrastructure in 20th-century Ukraine.
