Обломок Империи (Fragment Of An Empire) 1929

1929 · Fridrikh Ermler, Ekaterina Vinogradskaya

Fragment of an Empire (1929) 1080p, English Subtitles While studying the history of Russian Cinema the names of Vertov, Kuleshov, Eisenstein, Pudovkin, Dovzhenko, and even occasionally Kalatazov are most often talked about and lauded by scholars, academics, and aficionados. Why Fridrikh Ermler is so often overlooked isn't entirely clear. Perhaps he was a little too popular with Stalin's regime for Western artistic tastes, or maybe his portrayals were too controversial and challenging for people's sensibilities. Nevertheless, Ermler's Fragment of an Empire is a deeply personal, complex, nuanced character study, rich with artistic and technical merits creating a confluence of dynamic elements which combine to make one of the most unforgettable films in the history of the Soviet silent film era. A feast for the senses! Brilliantly restored and re-released in 2018 by an expert team at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival in collaboration with Russian Gosfilmofond, EYE Filmmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Swiss Cinémathèque.
