This classic production, originally staged in 1987, was directed by international opera legend John Copley, who had a long association with our company. The designs, by Robin Don and Vicki Feitscher, conjure up the heat of a Spanish summer. The staging was filmed at the Sydney Opera House in 1991, with Richard Bonynge on the conductor’s podium and Chilean mezzo-soprano Victoria Vergara in the title role. At the time, she was one of the world’s favourite Carmens, having performed the role all throughout North America and Europe. She’s joined by American tenor Neil Rosenshein, a regular at the Metropolitan Opera and many of the world’s great opera houses, as Don José. Australian soprano Deborah Riedel plays Micaëla, right as her international career was beginning the blossom, and company regular John Wegner plays Escamilo.
