Presents a study of South America's unique, native members of the camel family in the Andes, including the llama, guanaco, alpaca, and vicuña. Traces their evolution, examines their physical characteristics, and economic importance as pack animals and as a rich source of meat and wool. Recounts efforts to save them and their comeback from near extinction. Reveals how a resurgence of respect for the wisdom of the old Inca ways and traditions is leading to a greater appreciation of the llama that benefits both man and beast.
