Windows 386 Video Drivers

operating-system · driver · video · Windows · MS-DOS

This collection of files contain the Windows 386 drivers for the Tseng ET4K and Trident TVGA 8900D SVGA video adapters. The V1DSK and V1DSK2.ZIP files were originally downloaded from: http://cd.textfiles.com/carousel/030A/ where they can still be obtained. These downloads contains Win386 drivers for various video boards, including the Tseng drivers shown. Now one has to jump through hassles as the installer programs actually modifies the Win386 setup disk. As such, I have provided a HD image (127MB, Type 32) which already has MS-DOS v3.31 and Windows 386 installed with the Tseng ET4K drivers. The image also contains the modified setup files so if one wanted to reinstall Win386 from the HD with the Tseng drivers built-in, one can proceed to there hearts content. The image was made on PCEM, and should work on 86Box too. The configuration that I've tested the drivers with was a emulated AT-386 PC with around a AMI 386 motherboard with a 33MHz Intel 386 and 3MB's of RAM. For the Trident TVGA 8900D, the drivers for Windows 386 are contained in the fs026_3.exe file that I've downloaded eons ago (I don't remember where). As such, when I've recently Googled-searched for that filename, it took me to one of those "Driver" sites that wants you to install one of there "client" programs to download the driver. As such, I've included my upload here instead. It's a self-extracting EXE. However, I've also created my own 1.44MB display driver image containing those files so that when you install Win386 and the setup program request the video drivers, you can supply that image instead. Both drivers work on PCEM and Windows 386 can run at the screen resolution of 1024 by 768 pixels. While claiming to be 256 colors, the dithering in Easel makes one wonder. However, there is a lot more screen real-estate compared to basic VGA, so that is a plus. In general, one can get a lot more from these drivers than compared with VGA. One website that I highly recommend is Toastytech. There is a lot of valuable information in regard to Windows 1.x/2.x that served as a vital reference when working with these old Windows versions. This page in particular: http://toastytech.com/guis/win1x2x.html is of vital reference. On the last page, there even appears to be a link for the Trident TVGA 8900D (man I feel stupid now). Also of importance is: https://www.betaarchive.com/ which served as another vital reference, (and where I learned about the existance of both the ET4K and 8900D display drivers). Also recommended is Josh Elliot of who operates: http://www.seasip.info/VintagePC/ This website has a lot of valuable information about older video display adapters and serves as another vital source.
