🔻 About This is a collection of Virtual Machine / Dosbox (or similar forks) images which are ready to add and run. They contain minimal edits and stay as close to the stock Windows installation as possible. However, the images do contain modern unofficial patches which enhance the ability of these retro systems so that they are compatible with newer technologies. The images contained within this archive are targeted toward retro systems which have long past support by Microsoft. We will not be adding any modern-day images for operating systems such as Windows 10 or 11. ✅ Compatible with RomM 4.x ✅ Compatible with DOSBox ✅ Compatible with DOSBox-X ✅ Compatible with DOSBox Staging ✅ Compatible with QEMU ✅ Compatible with 86Box ⚠️ Compatible potentially with VirtualBox (must convert .img to .vdi ) 📰 Changelog 2025-08-25 📀 Added: Windows Millennium 2025-08-24 📕 Update archive.org description 2025-08-23 📀 Added: Windows 98 SE 📀 Update: Windows 95 OSR 2.5 ✏️ Change: Add NE2000 network capabilities ✏️ Change: Add Ultrasound audio device 2025-08-22 📀 Added: Windows 95 OSR 2.5 🧣 Status: Archive created ⚙️ Configuration This section explains how to configure these images. 📕 Documentation Each image includes a 📄 dosbox.conf which is heavily commented and explains just about every feature within the file. It is highly recommended that you at least go through and review the settings under the sections [cpu], [dosbox], [dos]. In particular, you can change the amount of memory available to the machine. Memory is calculated in kilobytes : [dosbox] memsize = 512 vmemsize = 16 vmemsizekb = 512 You can change the machine type by modifying: [dosbox] machine = svga_s3 Machines (Dosbox-X) Name Note svga_s3 Default option mda IBM Monochrome Display Adapter (text only) hercules Hercules Graphics Card (monochrome) cga IBM Color Graphics Adapter, with auto RGB/Composite switching cga_mono CGA on a monochrome TTL monitor (MDA-style) cga_rgb Standard CGA RGBI monitor (digital RGB) cga_composite Original IBM CGA NTSC artifact colors (pre-1983) cga_composite2 Improved NTSC color burst (post-1983) pcjr IBM PCjr graphics pcjr_composite / pcjr_composite2 CGA-like output for NTSC tandy Tandy 1000 graphics (PCjr-compatible) amstrad Amstrad PC1512 EGA-like mode ega IBM Enhanced Graphics Adapter jega Japanese JEGA (EGA variant for Japanese characters) mcga IBM PS/2 MCGA (320×200 256-color, 640×480 mono) vgaonly Basic VGA only, without SVGA extensions (safe compatibility mode) svga_s3vision864 S3 Vision 864, mid-90s 2D accelerator, up to 2MB VRAM. svga_s3vision964 S3 Vision 964, PCI version, faster BitBLT, up to 4MB VRAM. svga_s3vision868 S3 Vision 868, enhanced 864 with higher bandwidth. svga_s3vision968 S3 Vision 968, high-end PCI version of 868. svga_s3trio32 S3 Trio32, budget PCI card, very common in mid-90s PCs. svga_s3trio64v+ S3 Trio64V+, improved Trio with video acceleration. svga_s3virge S3 ViRGE, first mass 3D accelerator, strong 2D, weak 3D. svga_s3virgevx S3 ViRGE/VX, upgraded ViRGE with more VRAM support. svga_et3000 Tseng ET3000, early fast VGA card, limited SVGA support. svga_et4000 Tseng ET4000, very fast DOS VGA/SVGA, gamer favorite. svga_paradise Paradise PVGA1A, early SVGA card, widely compatible. pc98 Generic NEC PC-98 emulation, Japanese DOS platform. pc9801 NEC PC-9801, early models (8086/286), Japan-only DOS PC. pc9821 NEC PC-9821, later models (486/Pentium), supports Win95. To change the cputype type: [cpu] core = dynamic cputype = pentium_iii fpu = true rdtsc rate = 200000000 CPU Types (Dosbox-X) Name Note auto Default (emulates a fast 486 that tolerates Pentium instr.) 8086 Similar to the 8088 in the IBM PC/XT (16-bit core, 8-bit bus) 80186 Improved 8086, rarely used in IBM PC compatibles 286 Intel 80286 (IBM PC AT), adds protected mode 386 Intel 80386, first 32-bit x86 CPU, introduces paging/v86 mode 486 Intel 80486, adds on-chip cache and optional FPU pentium Intel Pentium (586), superscalar, needed for DirectX 8.0a pentium_mmx Pentium with MMX multimedia instructions ppro Pentium Pro (686), better branch prediction, no MMX pentium_ii Pentium II, successor to Pro, adds MMX pentium_iii Pentium III, successor to II, adds SSE instructions experimental Enables newer x86 instr. not tied to specific CPU (e.g. FISTTP) *_prefetch Variants with accurate prefetch queue emulation (slower) *_slow Variants with accurate page privilege checks (slower) You can also disable Voodoo 3D Acceleration by modifying the settings: [voodoo] voodoo_card = false voodoo_maxmem = true glide = false lfb = full_noaux splash = true 📄 Startup Autoexec At the very bottom of the 📄 dosbox.conf , you can modify the auto-mount actions. These actions will be performed as soon as your dosbox-x app is started up. In the example below; we perform two actions: [autoexec] imgmount 2 win98SE.img -ide 0m # mount our win98se.img image os boot c: # boot to C: You can add your own instructions to mount personal drives so that you can access files on you
