The package comes with extensive and well-written documentation (on the DATABASE-2 diskette), although the menu facility is so friendly that one need only use the manual as a reference. Among the many outstanding capabilities of File-Express is the ability to handle databases up to 16 million records in length, each of which may have up to 40 fields. Additionally, File-Express allows the definition of automatically entered calculated fields based on user specified formulas involving other fields. Automatically entered date and time fields are supported in a variety of formats. Powerful report generating (and label making) facilities allow the user to specify which records to include in reports (or generate labels for) by specifying a series of conditions and logical operators. For example, in a customer database with appropriate fields, it would be possible to list all customers with a last name of "Jones" through "Lambert" who live in the state of California and whose last purchase exceeded $10.00. Report and label formats may be created and saved away for use at a later time. File-Express sort facilities allow records to be sorted on up to ten fields, with each separate field able to be sorted in ascending or descending order. Any subset of a field may be specified as the basis of a sort. Files can even be imported from PC-File III and PC-File Plus format and used by File-Express. No user programming of any kind is required to use File-Express. One need only define the fields desired in a particular database and start adding records as needed. You will never want to keep manual records again!
