The file also contains updates that are not found in the Online User's Manual or in any addendum accompanying the display adapter. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Adapter Installation Refer to the Online User's Manual for information on adapter installation. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Installation Notes for Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) Systems If you are installing a RAGE 128 AGP graphics adapter, your system may require installation of the most recent AGP services VxD (virtual device driver), in addition to the ATI enhanced display drivers. AGP supports a Direct Memory Execute (DIME) feature which allows AGP graphics cards to use system memory (typically for storing large, detailed texture bitmaps) as if it were on-board graphics memory. A device called a Graphics Address Remapping Table (GART), under the control of a VGARTD VxD driver, manages these system memory addresses ("VGARTD" stands for Virtual GART Driver). For systems using Intel 440LX/BX chipsets Windows 95 users must be running OEM Service Release (OSR) version 2.1, or later, and have VGARTD.VxD installed (in the Systems folder); otherwise AGP functionality will not be available (the VxD driver is installed by the ATI installation program). The program USBSUPP.EXE (supplied with Windows 95 OSR 2.1) is also required, as this installs the VMM32.VxD memory manager that is needed by AGP's DIME feature. DirectX 5 or greater is needed to support AGP's DIME feature. When you run the ATI Installation program, the correct VGARTD.VxD component will be installed. Windows 98 does not require VGARTD.VxD, to support AGP's DIME feature. Windows 98 provides this support as long as DirectX 5.0 (or greater) is installed. For systems using non-Intel chipsets Several AGP motherboard manufacturers use non-Intel AGP chipsets. Chipsets include those made by Acer Laboratories (ALI), Silicon Integrated Systems (SIS), and VIA Technologies, Inc. Each non-Intel chipset requires the installation of a custom Virtual GART Driver. It is very important that the correct VxD driver be installed before operating your system. In most cases, for those chipset manufacturers just mentioned, the ATI Installation program should install the Virtual GART Driver, which matches your system's chipset. However, if you experience display problems following installation, you should obtain the latest Virtual GART (AGP) Driver from the motherboard manufacturer. If you cannot locate the motherboard manufacturer, generic VxD drivers can usually be obtained from the chipset manufacturer. This can be done using the Add/Remove Programs option in the Control Panel. After the installation of your ATI graphics accelerator card, new hardware may be detected after restarting your computer. Follow the step-by-step instructions below to allow Windows to correctly identify your new hardware. To identify new hardware in Windows 95 1.Windows 95 launches the "Update Device Driver Wizard". If the Wizard does not appear, follow the instructions below under the section "Installing Enhanced Drivers for Windows 95 and Windows 98". 2.Click Next. 3.Click Finish. 4.Insert your Windows 95 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. 5.Click OK. 6.Type the following: D:\WIN95 (If D is not your CD-ROM drive, substitute D with the correct drive letter.) 7.Click OK. 8.Click Yes to restart your computer. You are now ready to install your ATI enhanced drivers. Proceed to the section "Installing Enhanced Drivers for Windows 95 and Windows 98" below, and follow the s
